I started to grow uneasy... what was his comeuppance that you were plotting? Good one. I used to practice shit talk with my dad at that age; I'd just throw put down after put down at him and he always bested me, but then I'd go to school the next day and use what I'd learned at the expense of the boys I liked. "Your mom's so fat she PHAT," meant "I love you."
It's funny you should mention pictures. My mother at 92 has at least 2 dozen photo albums, always there for all to peruse. Now we have hard drives that give memories something more temporary. One hard drive after another, and they slowly drift away.
As a young lad my father would take me camping in Algonquin park, about a five hour drive. It was where I saw my first moon rose
I completely understand what you mean. I am relegated to City Life and I hate not being able to see more stars. It's very cool that those photo albums are out and available for people to see and appreciate the ones who have come before us, and all those stories the pictures tell.
As I tell them routinely... " until the day after I die" to which I get the response " how can you talk s*** after your death"? And I respond- "because I'll still be in your head as you wonder whether that's me you hear somewhere in the background" haha
You know you are winning as a grandparent if, when your grandkids walk away from you, they're shaking their head and laughter and amusement while not quite sure whether you lost your mind or might be exactly right haha
I know that sort of thing happens and it's tragic in every case but me and my guys spent many years together on a daily basis or for summer vacations and have built fabulous relationships that remain to their respective adult lives which makes me very lucky guy and proud of every one of those cute little pains in the ass when they were growing up haha
In a left-handed sort of way, I cheated, and by that, I mean I was raised in my grandmother's house by her and my mother starting when I was five so I grew up thinking it was normal, and when my grandkids started coming, I was fortunate enough to live around them all and just carried on with the tradition
Brings back a lot to this 79+ as well....you're right how a word, name, smell, or even pretty tree line can bring memories flooding back. A lot of people you know consider you their reminder in chief
Hilarious and endearing. Nice to see the photos, too. The whole thing has a Bad News Bears cinematic quality.
You know Jonathan I never thought about that but you're exactly right Bad News Bears
A slice of life. Love it.
Thank you Henya :)

Yes ma'am, that sounds about exactly right haha
This is so funny. I bet he loved reading this post too!!
I sent him the link but he's 18 and living in Las Vegas so I don't expect he will see it for a while yet, but he will laugh
Ah Dave! This is so heartwarming! I'm still enjoying being a mommy, but I'm sure Gramma will be amazing fun. 🧡

The city wipes that away.

Thank you, David, for making laugh so much. I needed that.
My pleasure Joyce :) even after all these years when we get together we always have a great laugh together.
Isn’t that the most beautiful legacy?
I can well understand this feeling of joy… long may you continue to talk ‘shit’.

Ooooh love that!

Hahaha
Beautiful!
Thank you my friend
Keep laughing at the 'shit'.
Laughter makes life all the better for living
We hear so much about intergenerational trauma, but this counteracts it. Great storytelling, David.

It’s so heartwarming, David. A real lineage.

Love it.
Now that's a great story!
You had me at the first photo with the fishing pole and “bobber”. That started bringing back tons of memories.
I find that they call you “Old Man” endearing. I’m just known as Grammy. I think I’d like Old Lady better.
You sure have a way with words, and I enjoyed every one of them.
Grandkids are priceless. I have often said I would have preferred to have them first.

Thank you my friend... And thank God for digital photographs or I might not remember my own damn name first thing in the morning :)
Wooo boy I got rolled like that once in similar fashion. These most important lessons are often the most hilarious ones.
We still talk about it and laugh
