"You can't be considered lazy if having chosen to spend the entire day doing nothing was entirely by design." Of course! Why didn't I realise that. If I just stop making plans then I can stop beating myself up for not achieving them. Perfect hermit wisdom, thanks David, great post.

That quote reposted by April Whalley stuck in my mind, too. I'll never forget reading about European visitors to the Congo in the 19th century. One explorer, waiting to board a train to inland Africa, noted that the Africans waited silently, seemingly lost in thought and not engaging in conversation like the Europeans. The writer, whose journal I ran across a couple years ago, imagined that the black Africans must be like dumb animals, unable to think of anything to say. Maybe they were more highly evolved than we have imagined.

Nice catch! I can still hear my grandmother all these decades later who always told me to keep my eyes and ears open and my mouth shut if I wanted to learn anything haha
