I'm trying to sneak this in the narrow window of puppy nap time; you know, the brief stretch where they sleep off the excitement of all the new sites and smells and sounds while you're sitting in your chair, eyes bleeding because you're only allowed 30 minutes stretches of sleep overnight, praying for the day they'll stay asleep through the night so you can :) By the grace of God, at least the period of waiting for a puppy to do it is shorter than waiting for an infant humanoid to.
Every bit of this is pure cake. The happiness is contagious - and just fyi I’ll be delighted with photos if that’s all you have time for with those darlings.
We got our Bob the dog back when we lived in a condo loft in in Louisville, Kentucky. Our neighbor two doors down had a gigantic Newfoundland named Harvey. Of course, Harvey was a girl and she fell in love with Bob. When the neighbor let Harvey out and she saw Bob it was “run for your life, Bob!!!” That big sweet girl would lumber at him full speed. When I took them both to the cemetery behind our house they would rough house like crazy. Bob could actually take Harvey down by the nap of the neck at full speed. Quite a sight to see. Nobody ever got hurt (which was a miracle) but Harvey dumped the biggest load I’d ever seen from a dog right on our full room Indian rug.
I'm actually quite excited about it, there are so many ways to tell stories from a dog's perspective there's literally no limit to them stuff that can be written
I love stories like this! When my wife and I were still dating, we got a Bernese kind of on a whim. Today he is the biggest, hairiest, most love filled creature I’ve ever met in my life. Big dogs make the world go round. Excited to hear more about Alice and Emma growing up together!
I think I put 1 in notes a while back but I'll post another 1 just for you right now from the day I babysat her and Emma at Emma's house the first week we had the girls
Reading this newsletter, I am filled with a growing sense of glee! Dave, you are a master. The way you build the tension and anticipation for the climax of TWO puppies, is just brilliant! And a bonus is I can tell this comes straight from the heart. I feel your joy as if it were my own. Congratulations, and much love, enjoy your new baby and her sister's frequent visits, and best of luck to all of you! 🧡🐶
Thank you Jenny! It's going to be a wild ride and I wouldn't have it any other way :) once I teach her the Fine Art of strategically placing swear words in a story, despite her lack of Thumbs she will be " telling" her own stories about life with an old blind guy and terrorizing is daily life in Cahoots withher sister :)
LOL!!! Congratulations on your new babies. May the joy continued unabated! You are indeed a very lucky man.
When Buda died last September, I swore by all that is holy never to have another animal. We've had to euthanized or hold animals while they died horrible painful deaths in the past. I'm really done with that pain. Yet, I read your piece, feeling every prickle of laughter and love and joy and craziness you experienced in that room full of puppies. My goodness what rapture! Thank you for the vicarious thrills. I look forward to reading Alive's Diaries. Carry on with courage, my dear man.
Thank you very much and thank you for the kind words and I completely understand where you're coming from... I'm pretty sure this is my last Rodeo no matter what but I'll do the best I can to give you a puppy giggle
I look forward to puppy giggles. They should be easy to get if you keep your camera handy. Finding time to upload them is another story. Best wishes, David, for a jolly good time.
It has been almost unanimous that "The Alice Diaries" is the favored choice :) I'll make a place for them on the home website so the archives can be found as well as posting them here at substack. I think it's going to be a lot of fun and very unserious full comic relief :)
I LOVE THIS!!!! If I could see a hundred puppy adoption stories a day it still wouldn't be enough! I'm super happy you took both of them. Your life with two grown Newfies is going to be amazing...you might want to seek sponsorship from Swiffer 😂😂
Congratulations! I also went for one puppy and ended up with two. (Without asking my husband first which is a much longer story… your daughter did the right thing!) I’m so excited to read The Adventures of Alice and her Sister.
Thank you my friend, I think there is a lot of fun to be had and a whole lot more room for creativity... Sort of like "dear diary, my dad taught me a new word today... Why do humans laugh the way they do... And so forth ;)"

I'm so happy I could pop haha

Such a great story and I know exactly what you mean
OMG, this is so wonderful. I can't wait to read the Alice Diaries! I'm glad for you and the furry additions to your family!

I love this!
I love it! I like the diary idea and hope to read about future stories. Accompanying it with pictures would be nice.
You can count on it!
Love the photo of you and Alice. Pure joy. You are truly in ur element.
I am beside myself
Nothing compares to living with a large animal. She is so cute. I’d love to see a video. Enjoy.

Every dog has his day. I miss my working Cocker Spaniel every day. He died about 6 months ago. A dog brings you uncomplicated love, consistently.

Congratulations!!!!!! Welcome to the wonderful, hilarious, chaotic life of parenting/wrangling/loving/laughing with two big puppies!
Thank you!
I like Alice Diaries. Alice in Humanland, David in Doggyland. :)

Oh goodness no, I have an industrial size shop vac hahaha
Perfect !!
Perfect !!
“Fuck it!” was how I went from 1 dog to a pack of 4 in two years. 🙄 I understand.
It's how I ended up with seven English Masters my friend... But I bet that, like me, there are no regrets :)
Not one ❤️

I would love to hear that much longer story... Especially knowing the way you would probably tell it haha
Alice Diaries sounds like a good title, David!

This is going to be FUN!
Can't wait till I can get enough sleep to start writing these haha
